The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) awarded Princeton University Campus Dining with the Gold Award for Sustainability in Waste Management this past weekend in Denver, Colorado.

The award recognizes the #LoveAMug campaign, which increased awareness about and participation in a re-usable mug program across campus. Anyone who brought a reusable mug to the various retail café locations received a fill-up of coffee for two dollars. At this price, coffee in a reusable mug was the best coffee deal on campus.

“With this program, we made the more sustainable option the most attractive option” explains Sustainability Manager Sarah Bavuso.

During the initial two-week pilot, tposter of instagram postshe campaign prevented nearly 1,500 paper cups from the landfill while also celebrating the unique backgrounds of staff and departments.

Individuals were encouraged to share pictures of their mugs and the stories behind them on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #LoveAMug. Campus Dining gave away a free cup of coffee each day to the most unique posts.

All told, the campaign featured more 65 posts with stories from nearly 40 individuals and departments across campus.

Thanks to the success of the pilot, #LoveAMug was re-launched as a permanent offer to coffee and tea drinkers on campus.
